Legislation to ease the application and eligibility requirements for a foreclosure prevention program cleared Congress today, Tuesday, May 19. The legislation would extend through December 31, 2013, an increase to $250,000 per account in deposit insurance coverage by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and National Credit Union Administration.
The Senate voted 90-5 this afternoon to place new restrictions on credit card fees and interest rate policies. The legislation would ban issuers in most cases from raising rates on existing balances retroactively, require a 45-day notice for any rate increase and prohibit billing on balances for days not included in the last billing cycle as a result of a grace period.
In the supplemental appropriations for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2009, the Committee recommends $50,000,000, as requested, for wildfire suppression and emergency rehabilitation activities of the Department of the Interior, available only if other available funds will be exhausted imminently.
