| Injured Paraglider in Colorado Flown to Hospital by Helicopter | Tuesday, July 01, 2008 (83 reads) Erik Larsen, a 39-year-old paraglider who lives in Ridgway, went first. But almost immediately after launching, something went wrong. About 80 percent of his wing collapsed, according to an onlooker, folding under itself. The paraglider took a sudden, 120-degree turn toward the slope before the wing re-inflated. But it was too late, and Larsen was too close to the ground. Like a pendulum, he swung into the ski slope, crashing near the Dynamo sign and severely injuring his back.
What followed was a rapid rescue operation by fellow pilots, the local Search and Rescue team and a helicopter crew from Durango that got the injured man off the lofty peak and to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction in less than two hours.
